How Do I Get An ESA Letter in Florida?

A therapist meeting with a client during videochat in Florida.

Florida has its own rules for mental health documentation like ESA letters, FMLA documentation, and gender-affirming care notifications. Our psychotherapists, licensed in Florida, follow all local regulations to help you receive valid avenues for care.

A student at a Florida university might come to us for an ESA letter to keep a dog in the dorm. A few years later, that same person might ask an employer for accommodations, and later still, they might ask us for FMLA paperwork to take medical leave. Here's what every Florida client gets:

  • You meet with a Florida-licensed psychotherapist via secure telehealth, usually in a single appointment.
  • If you qualify, most letters are ready soon after your visit.
  • We're a self-pay practice since many of these appointments are not covered by insurance plans, and our prices are posted on our website before you book.
  • Your landlord, school, or employer can contact us with follow-up questions about your letter.

From there, you send your letter to your landlord, school, or HR office. We refer clients to our network of therapists, psychologists, and coaches for follow-up upon request.

ESA Letters That Meet State Housing Law

Section 760.27 of the Florida Statutes covers emotional support animals in housing. When a landlord or condo association asks for proof, the law accepts supporting details from a licensed health care practitioner or telehealth provider who has personal knowledge of your disability and works within the scope of their practice. ADA Accommodation Letters and College Accommodation Letters

The ADA and the Florida Civil Rights Act apply to jobs with at least 15 employees, and the state law lists handicap as a protected category. We conduct a diagnostic evaluation and write a letter to your employer requesting appropriate accommodations. Learn more about accommodations documentation.

For students, Florida law allows reasonable substitutions for some admission and graduation standards at public colleges and universities when documentation ties the missed standard to a disability. Our college accommodation letter is sent to your school's disability office, and our adult ADHD and autism evaluations can provide a diagnosis first.

Gender-Affirming Care Letters for Adults

Our psychotherapists are WPATH members and follow its clinical guidelines for these evaluations. If you qualify after your evaluation, you leave with a letter that supports hormone therapy, surgery, or voice therapy. Learn more about gender-affirming care letters.

Florida adds a separate step for adults. Under section 456.52, the physician who prescribes hormones or performs the surgery has to meet with you in person and have you sign a consent document adopted by the state medical boards. Our letter is sent to your medical providers, and the physician handles the consent visit.

FMLA Paperwork From a Licensed Therapist

Florida relies on the federal Family and Medical Leave Act for job-protected leave. FMLA gives any eligible team member up to 12 weeks of job-protected, unpaid leave for serious health conditions, including mental health conditions. Bring your form packet to your appointment and tell us the dates you're requesting. We'll complete our section and send it back, and your HR department can contact us directly with questions.

Common Questions About ESA, Gender-Affirming Care, and FMLA Letters

  • Who can write a gender-affirming care letter in Florida?

Healthcare providers, insurance companies, and surgeons ask for these letters from a licensed mental health provider. Our clinicians write them for Florida adults after a diagnostic evaluation.

  • Does Florida require a therapist for FMLA paperwork?

Florida follows the federal FMLA rules, which require certification from a health care provider. The federal list includes doctors, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, and nurse practitioners, and your employer can also accept certification from other providers.
